Where to find suppliers in China: Alibaba, alternatives and how to filter them

Finding suppliers in China is easy; finding the good ones is the hard part. There are many more options than Alibaba, and it pays to know how to read what each channel really offers you.
Online platforms
- Alibaba: the best known. Beware: "Gold Supplier" is a paid plan, not a quality guarantee. Look for the "Verified Supplier" badge and trade through "Trade Assurance".
- Made-in-China and Global Sources: alternatives with a good industrial catalogue, often with suppliers more focused on export.
- 1688 (Chinese domestic market): lower prices, but it is in Chinese and designed for the domestic market; you normally need an agent to buy there.
Offline
- Trade fairs (Canton Fair and sector fairs): they let you see and touch the product and meet the manufacturer in person.
- Sourcing agents: they locate and vet factories on the ground, filtering out intermediaries.
- Recommendations from other importers in your sector.
How to filter candidates
- Verify the business licence and, if you need it, that it is a manufacturer and not an intermediary.
- Request samples and compare them between suppliers.
- Audit or visit the factory before a large order.
- Start with a trial order before committing volume.
