"Made in PRC": what it means and why it appears on your products

"Made in PRC": qué significa y por qué aparece en tus productos

You have received an order and, when checking the labelling, it does not say "Made in China" but "Made in PRC". Is it another country? Do you need to change anything? Don't worry: they mean exactly the same thing, but it is worth understanding why it is used and what implications it has.

What PRC means

PRC stands for *People's Republic of China*, that is, the People's Republic of China. "Made in PRC" literally means "manufactured in the People's Republic of China". It is the country's official name since 1949.

Is it the same as "Made in China"?

Yes. For origin purposes, "Made in PRC" and "Made in China" are equivalent: the product was manufactured in China and is governed by the same country-of-origin rules.

Why some factories use "PRC"

  • Brand perception: many consumers do not immediately associate "PRC" with China, which avoids prejudices about quality and allows the product to be judged on its merits.
  • Formality: it is the official name of the state, and it sounds more institutional.
  • Regulatory reasons: some markets require the country's official name to be stated.

What it implies for you as an importer

The most important thing: the customs origin does not change. For Customs, "Made in PRC" is China, with the same tariffs, the same tariff classification and the same documentation. It does not save you any taxes nor change your declaration.

  • The country of origin for tariff purposes is still China.
  • Mandatory certifications (CE, etc.) remain just as enforceable.
  • If you sell in the EU, the labelling must comply with the consumer information rules for the corresponding product.

The label does not guarantee quality

Whether it says "PRC" or "China" says nothing about how good or bad the product is. China manufactures both excellent and poor items; the difference is made by quality control, not by the wording on the label.
