What is the DDP Incoterm and when it suits you

When negotiating an import from China, the Incoterm is as important as the price: it defines how far the supplier's responsibility goes and where yours begins. Of all of them, DDP gives the importer the most peace of mind, because it shifts almost the entire operation to the seller.

In this guide we explain exactly what it is, what it includes, its advantages and drawbacks, and when it's the best option for your business.

What DDP means

DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid. It's the Incoterm with maximum responsibility for the seller: they commit to delivering the goods at the agreed destination — usually your warehouse — bearing all costs and risks of the journey, including import clearance and duties.

What it includes exactly

  • Transport from the factory in China to your address.
  • Export clearance at origin and import clearance at destination.
  • Import duties.
  • Cargo insurance and document handling.

In practice, all you have to do is receive the goods. One important nuance: import VAT is usually handled separately, since it's deductible for businesses and it makes no sense for the foreign supplier to advance it.

Advantages of DDP

  • Fixed, predictable price: you know the final cost from the start.
  • Zero paperwork or customs handling on your side.
  • Ideal for those starting to import or who want no complications.
  • Easy to compare between suppliers, because everything is included.

Drawbacks to bear in mind

DDP usually has a somewhat higher unit price, because the supplier builds in its margin on the logistics. You also lose control over the choice of forwarder and the transit times. If you have your own logistics operator and some volume, other options may work out cheaper.

DDP versus FOB: which to choose?

FOB gives you the best price if you handle the transport and clearance yourself; DDP gives you convenience and predictability in exchange for a surcharge. A practical rule: if you import occasionally or don't want to deal with customs, choose DDP; if you import often and have your own logistics, also ask for a FOB quote and compare the total cost.
